Lochwinnoch

Information
This pleasant and easy walk is a 4 km, or alternatively 8 km, loop along tranquil country roads, in part skirted by hardwood trees, that takes the hiker past a rare example of a round barn.

How to get there
Driving down Hwy 17, about 2 km from Renfrew, going towards Ottawa, turn left along Lochwinnoch Rd (Cty Rd 6). Follow the winding Lochwinnoch Rd, until Lochwinnoch Presbyterian Church is on your left, where there is a parking lot. Alternatively, the start of the walk can be reached by taking the Miller Rd (Cty Rd 63) turnoff on Hwy 17, then turning right onto Lochwinnoch Rd.

Directions

  • From the Lochwinnoch Presbyterian Church, turn right. Note the quartz crystals in the rock outcrop on the other side of the road.
  • (For a shorter walk of 4 km, turn left along the unpaved Milton Stewart Ave.) For the longer route, continue straight along Lochwinnoch Rd to Miller Rd, which forms part of the Voyageur Route.
  • Turn left onto Miller Rd, and left again onto Clifford Side Rd, which is initially bordered by boggy land, well populated with wildflowers, birds and butterflies. Later, the dirt road runs through hardwood forest, with a magnificent example of an American Elm on your right (opposite the 911-system number 348). Carry on through the intersection. Here, there are Sugar Maples and sugar shacks.
  • Turn left onto Lochwinnoch Rd, then take the next left, where you will see the round barn. Continue along the road, to the Lochwinnoch Presbyterian Church.

Points of Interest

The Round Barn along Lochwinnoch Road in Horton Township is one of only two in Ontario. Not round at all, it is an octagonal structure with a fine roof made of spruce rafters with no internal supporting posts. The barn was constructed with stalls for cattle and sheep and stored hay. It was built in 1884 by Allan John Lindsay whose family were among the early settlers in the area that originated from Lochwinnoch in Scotland. Another eight-sided structure found in the region is an octagonal house, surrounded by a tall cedar hedge and located on the south side of Hwy 17, between Cobden and Pembroke.

Maple Leaves

The spring is heralded by the red buds, red flowers of the Red Maple and those of the Sugar Maple, which are pale greenish-yellow. Mature Red Maple leaves are dark green above and a greyish-green (some say silvery) below. The Sugar Maple leaf colour has less contrast being a fresh green above, pale green beneath. The centre part of the Canadian flag is, of course, a stylized Sugar Maple leaf. And like the flag's design, the Sugar Maple's leaf has three main lobes that are broadly rectangular and separated by deep notches. The Red Maple lobes are more triangular.
